Overview
Mautic is an open source marketing automation platform. DB Hurley started it in 2014. Acquia bought the company in 2019, and since 2023 it has been an independent project governed through the Open Source Collective. The project says it powers more than 40,000 websites in 85 countries. You can install it on your own servers and send unlimited contacts. It includes a visual campaign builder, a drag-and-drop email and landing page builder, forms, segments, lead scoring and behavioural tracking based on website visits and email engagement. Messaging covers email, SMS, WhatsApp and notifications, and a REST API and plugins extend it. Segment emails support A/B testing with weighted variants and a chosen winner criterion. The software has no licence fee. Your costs are hosting and email sending, for example through Amazon SES, which an independent reviewer estimated at under 15 US dollars a month for moderate volumes. Managed hosting is also offered through partners, and Acquia sells a commercial product built on Mautic called Campaign Studio. Mautic suits technically capable teams, agencies and privacy-conscious organisations that want data sovereignty and no per-contact pricing. The main drawback is effort: installing, upgrading from the command line and maintaining the system fall on you. Support is community-based unless you buy it from a partner, and reviewers report a steep learning curve and uneven documentation.
