Toggl

6.6/10

Toggl is a time tracking and lightweight project planning platform for freelancers, agencies and small teams that bill by the hour or manage team capacity.

Data last updated November 2026 · Our methodology

Overview

Toggl, best known for Toggl Track, began in 2006 as a Tallinn consultancy that built its own timer. It is now a fully remote software company of about 90 people. Its suite covers time tracking, project tracking and resource planning. Users run one-click or background timers, log time manually, keep tasks and boards, and set task estimates. Paid tiers add billable rates, timeline views, milestones, PTO and holidays, and team capacity signals. Premium adds labor cost and profitability reports, fixed-fee projects, project dashboards and timesheet approvals. It suits freelancers, agencies and consultancies that need accurate billable hours and want to see how profitable each project is. Pricing is per user per month. The Free plan covers a small number of users. Starter costs $9 annually or $12 monthly, Premium costs $16 annually or $24 monthly, and Enterprise is quoted. Two add-ons are available: Time Off Management at $2 and Capacity Management at $5 to $6 per user per month. Integrations include Google Calendar, Outlook, Slack, Trello and QuickBooks Online, plus Jira and Asana on Premium, Zapier and Make, a REST API, webhooks and browser extensions. The main limitation is that Toggl is a time and profitability tool first, not a full work-management platform. It has no docs, whiteboards, team chat or deep workflow automation. Reviewers also cite a large price jump to Premium, permissions that are confusing or limited, and email-only support.

Who Toggl is best for

Good fit

  • A free plan and simple one-click timers with billable rates suit solo billers.

  • Profitability reports, fixed-fee projects and billable rates target client billing.

  • Hourly billing, approvals and labor cost reporting fit consulting workflows.

  • The free tier for small teams and low Starter pricing work well for small firms.

  • It runs on web, desktop and mobile with offline sync, and the vendor is itself fully remote.

  • Teams can start cheaply, though they need other tools for full project management.

Less suited

  • Mid-Market
    6/10

Approvals, SSO and capacity add-ons help, but permissions are limited.

  • Billable rates and a QuickBooks Online integration help firms that bill clients for time.

  • It integrates with Jira on Premium and offers a REST API with webhooks.

  • An Enterprise plan exists, but 2FA cannot be enforced and there are only three fixed permission levels.

  • Legal
    5/10

Billable hour tracking and timesheet approvals suit hourly billing.

  • The notes say it has no GPS tracking or shift scheduling.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Timers are quick to start with one click, offline tracking syncs later, and a background timeline captures activity without screenshots.
  • The free plan covers small teams, and paid features can be tried for 30 days.
  • Premium adds profitability and labor cost reports, which help agencies see whether each project makes money.
  • Integrations cover calendars, Slack, Trello, QuickBooks and Zapier, and there is a public REST API with webhooks.
  • Toggl lists ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and CCPA compliance.

Cons

  • On monthly billing, Premium costs twice as much as Starter, and profitability reports and approvals are only on Premium.
  • Support is by email and chat only, with no phone line, and some reviewers report slow responses.
  • Workspace owners cannot enforce 2FA for all users, and reviewers find the role permissions confusing.
  • There is no GPS tracking, shift scheduling or native payroll, and invoicing is limited.
  • Reviewers say the mobile app is weaker than the web and desktop apps.
