Overview

Rackspace Technology is a San Antonio managed cloud company founded in 1996. Its core business is running infrastructure for other organisations. It provides 24x7x365 managed operations across environments, and analysts list it as a managed service partner for AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. It also sells private cloud built on VMware Cloud Foundation, offered as dedicated, multi-tenant, bare metal, sovereign, hybrid, or on-premises deployments. A newer line of enterprise AI services includes GPU-as-a-Service, inference, and fine-tuning. Most of these engagements are custom-quoted, and Rackspace publishes no plan prices for them. The exception is Rackspace Spot, a self-service market where customers bid for servers and pay a clearing price per hour. Bids start at $0.01 per hour, and fixed on-demand rates are also available. Spot includes managed Kubernetes with a free control plane, or a high-availability control plane for $40 per month. It runs in nine regions across the US, London, Hong Kong, and Sydney. Spot can be managed through a Terraform provider, a Go SDK, the spotctl CLI, and an MCP server. Rackspace suits enterprises and mid-market IT teams that want to hand day-2 operations to a partner, while Spot suits developers looking for cheap Kubernetes capacity. Its main weakness is customer trust. Trustpilot reviews average about 1.2 out of 5 and focus on billing changes, price increases, and slow support. The 2022 Hosted Exchange security incident still affects its reputation, and in 2026 the company cut about 15 percent of staff, partly by moving resources away from legacy public cloud delivery toward AI services.

Who Rackspace Technology is best for

Good fit

  • Its managed multicloud, private cloud, and day-2 operations services are built and priced for large organisations.

  • IT teams can outsource 24x7 operations across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and VMware environments.

  • Mid-sized companies without large ops teams can hand infrastructure management to Rackspace.

Less suited

  • Rackspace Spot gives developers self-service, low-cost Kubernetes with Terraform and CLI tooling.

  • Custom quotes and weak sentiment from smaller hosting and email customers make it a poor fit for small businesses.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Rackspace Spot's auction pricing starts at $0.01 per node-hour, and the free managed Kubernetes control plane makes it cheap for workloads that can tolerate preemption.
  • It manages all three major hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) plus VMware private cloud, so one partner can run a hybrid estate.
  • Spot can be automated through a Terraform provider, a Go SDK, the spotctl CLI, and an MCP server.
  • Enterprise reviewers on Gartner Peer Insights and TrustRadius rate it about 4.5 out of 5, and G2 reviewers praise its uptime.

Cons

  • Trustpilot reviews average about 1.2 out of 5, with repeated complaints about billing, price increases, and cancellation handling.
  • Managed service, migration, and private cloud pricing is not published and needs a sales quote.
  • The 2022 Hosted Exchange security incident, which forced customers to move to Microsoft 365, still weighs on its reputation for reliability.
  • Its finances are under pressure: net losses in 2024 and 2025 and a 2026 layoff of about 15 percent of staff could affect service delivery.
