Overview
OpenProject is a GPLv3 open source project management suite that grew out of a fork of ChiliProject and Redmine. Its first release came in 2012. The core unit is the work package, which supports custom types, statuses and workflows. Work packages feed Gantt charts with drag-and-drop scheduling, Kanban and Scrum boards, backlogs with burndown charts, time and cost tracking with budget reports, per-project wikis, and meeting agendas and minutes. The free Community edition runs on your own servers. Enterprise features are unlocked with a license key on the same codebase. Paid plans are priced per user per month in euros on a term contract: Basic at 5.95, Professional at 10.95 and Premium at 15.95. Basic and Professional require at least 25 users, Premium requires 100, and the on-premises-only Corporate tier requires 250 and is quoted on request. Monthly terms are available only for Cloud Basic, at an extra euro per user. A BIM add-on for construction teams costs one more euro per user. The cloud runs in EU data centers, and OpenProject offers a GDPR data processing agreement and AES-256 encryption at rest. For these reasons it appeals to public-sector bodies and European organizations that care about data sovereignty. OpenProject maintains integrations for GitHub, GitLab, Nextcloud and XWiki, with OneDrive and SharePoint as Enterprise add-ons. Slack, Mattermost and Toggl connections come from community plugins. The main drawbacks are a minimum of 25 paid users, a heavier interface than lightweight tools, a tricky self-hosted setup according to some users, and features such as SSO and portfolio management that are reserved for paid tiers.
