Workato

6.8/10

Workato is an enterprise platform for integration, automation and AI agents. It connects business apps and data and runs governed AI agents called Genies.

Data last updated November 2026 · Our methodology

Overview

Workato is a cloud platform where companies build integrations and automated workflows, called recipes, across more than 1,200 pre-built connectors. Over time it has added an AI layer on top of that integration base. Agent Studio is a low-code environment for designing, testing and deploying AI agents, which Workato calls Genies. Pre-packaged Genies cover areas such as IT, HR, sales, support and security. The platform also offers MCP servers and an AI/MCP gateway, so external assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT can act on enterprise systems under governance controls. Workato GO adds an employee assistant and enterprise search. Workato suits mid-size and large organisations that need cross-system automation with environments, role-based access control, audit trails and on-premises connectivity. Pricing is by edition: Standard, Business MCP, Enterprise MCP and Workato ONE. All are quoted by sales, and all include unlimited workspaces and users. The editions differ in workbots, on-prem gateways, concurrency and log retention. Agent Studio and the knowledge base come only with Workato ONE. Pre-packaged Genies, extra concurrency, Private Link, RPA and Virtual Private Workato are sold as add-ons. Third-party data puts the median annual contract at about 64,500 USD. The main drawback is cost and opacity: there is no public list price, usage is metered in ways that are hard to predict, and the lower editions are limited to one concurrent job. That makes Workato a heavy option for small teams that need simple app-to-app automation.

Who Workato is best for

Good fit

  • Governance, on-prem agents, audit and high-tier editions are built for large organisations.

  • Standard and Business editions fit mid-size IT teams, but quote-based pricing is steep.

Less suited

  • Systems integrators commonly build Workato recipes for clients, but this is inferred from its integration-heavy use rather than documented.

  • Sales-led pricing and a median contract of about 64,500 USD a year are too much for most small firms.

  • Cheaper tools such as Zapier, Make and n8n fit simple needs better.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • The library of more than 1,200 pre-built connectors lets AI agents act across many enterprise systems.
  • Governance controls built into the platform: RBAC, hourly key rotation, audit logs and guardrails that limit agents to approved skills.
  • On-prem gateways and Virtual Private Workato support hybrid and private environments.
  • Every edition includes unlimited workspaces and users, so costs do not rise with each new builder.
  • MCP servers let external assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT act on enterprise apps with controls in place.

Cons

  • No public list prices, and third-party data puts the median contract at about 64,500 USD a year.
  • Usage metering is hard to predict, and reruns count toward consumption.
  • The Standard and Business MCP editions are limited to one concurrent job.
  • Agent Studio and the knowledge base require the top Workato ONE edition.
