Data last updated November 2026 · Our methodology

Overview

Slack is Salesforce's workplace messaging platform. Teams talk in channels, threads, direct messages and huddles, and Slack Connect extends those conversations to outside organizations. For project work, Slack Lists turns tasks into tables or boards with assignees, due dates, subtasks and saved views. Canvases hold documents and checklists, and Workflow Builder automates routine requests and approvals. That makes Slack a reasonable coordination layer for small and mid-sized teams. Larger organizations get unlimited workspaces, enterprise search and granular roles on Enterprise+. Pricing is per user. The Free plan keeps 90 days of message history and allows up to 10 apps. Pro costs EUR 8.25 per user per month on monthly billing, or EUR 6.75 per user per month billed annually. Business+ costs EUR 18 monthly or EUR 15 annually per user, and Enterprise+ is quoted by sales. Advanced AI features such as search, recaps and AI-generated workflows come with Business+ and above. Enterprise Key Management, frontline worker plans and premium support plans are sold as extras. Slack's main strength is its integration ecosystem: thousands of apps, including ClickUp, Notion, HubSpot, Harvest and Clockify, can post into channels and trigger workflows. The main limitation for project management buyers is that Slack is not a full PM suite. It has no native Gantt charts, dependencies, time tracking or portfolio reporting, so most teams pair it with a dedicated project tool. Reviewers also often complain about notification overload and workspaces that get noisy as they grow.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • The app ecosystem is very large, and tools such as ClickUp, Notion, HubSpot and Clockify can post updates into channels.
  • Slack Connect lets teams work in shared channels with up to 250 outside organizations on paid plans.
  • Compliance coverage is broad, including ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, FedRAMP Moderate and HIPAA configurability.

Cons

  • The free plan keeps only 90 days of message history and allows 10 apps.
  • Advanced AI features require Business+ or above, and per-user costs add up as teams grow.
  • Reviewers report that finding older messages through search can be difficult.
